A View from the Patch

I have not updated this page in some time, to my regret. I've been working as a Field Supervisor for an independent oil and gas producer, and moved from SE Colorado to SW Wyoming.

I have had opportunies, that few get, to wear several hats. I had the opportunity to work with landowners, BLM, contractors, roustabouts, rig operators, consultants, engineers and CEOs. What a ride!!! I was hired to be a pumper and before long--one week, the operator was offered a better job. I was left with the field to see what I could do with it. It was making 600 bbls of oil per day and very little gas. I was able to see it go from that humble start to producing 3.5 mmcfpd and 200 bbls per day and looking for more prospects.

I stayed with my basic philosophy: bring the wells on slow, hold back pressure, install pumps above top perfs, use pressure actuated ring plungers and make several wells flow up the tubing or flump--and above all pay attention to production on a daily basis. As with all wells at some point, the production dropped a little and when the pumps needed to be changed we lowered some and left others the same. I installed two rod guides per rod, and never replaced a joint of tubing because of rod wear for two years. It pays to use the best!

We found that pouring a little chemical into the production water tank to protect the SWD and a little emulsifier for the oil was all that was needed.

The other project was a CBM play in Big Piney. We had a couple of wells that were looking pretty good until the smart people decided that holding back pressure was losing too much gas--like all greedy people or short-sighted egomaniacs--so we lowered the back pressure. The two wells were doing 472 mcfpd and within 6 hours they dropped to 100 mcfpd and they are still asking why. Another tidbit, they washed the zone with acid pad, ran hot water down the casing (the wells made some oil and it was thought that the perfs were plugged with paraffin), refrac'd the wells, and guess what? They're still dogs.

It pays to ask the operators what is going on in the field, since they are the ones spending the company’s money. If you are the type of administer that stays in the office playing Nintendo, you're in the wrong business. One who leaves the business to someone else will soon be looking for new opportunities!

I am still asked to do some consulting, but I’ve changed jobs to another independent, a much larger company. However, I wouldn’t have this opportunity unless I had paid my dues.

Been watching the news--what a joke this presidential campaign is going to be! Kerry slammin’ Bush for all his mistakes, I feel sorry for the troops for being in harm’s way and my prayers go out to every one of them. I appreciate them for being there, for I feel like it’s better to take the fight to the enemy instead of wait for them.

Rush went to rehab, but it wasn’t his fault--it was the docs. I know he is very popular, but if he was as smart as he lets on and could do so much better, why isn’t he running?

McCain/Clinton still thinks it’s safer to outlaw guns. I bet if you check out their body guards they just carry billy clubs like the English! When the bumper sticker came out saying “You’ll have to pry my cold dead fingers away from my gun,” I thought at the time this is another group trying to get money from the public. I have since seen the changes in our country and feel that I will do what I can to help stop the anti’s.

Oh yeah, that’s right, we're going to give everything we own to the illegals anyway, so why fight it?

Thank you for your attention,
Monty
